If you hear something negative about the neighborhood, ask when it happened because it might be an old information.
Is It Safe There?
When it comes to a place to live, anyone’s priority would be a safe neighborhood. There are few things that you can do to find out if the neighborhood is safe or not. Are there plenty of street lights? How many of them are in a working condition? Do they cover your mailbox or parking lot?
Don’t forget to check out the crime rates in a neighborhood before you even rent an apartment there. If it seems like the price is too good to be true, it clearly means that there might be some fishy reason behind it.

Convenience:
Even if a map shows that your workplace is 5 minutes away from your apartment, traffic can add more time to it. So, you must check how much time does it take to get to your work and do a little bit research on it as well. Also, check if there are any back roads you can easily commute and avoid traffic.
Determine the nearest grocery. Go inside and see it for yourself if you like it or not. Do the same for the pharmacy, library, dry cleaners, restaurants or any kind of service that you use on regular basis.
What Is Your Personal Preference?
Your personal preference for what you want in a neighborhood matters a lot. Also, it’s important to ask yourself few questions like:
- Is it easy for you to fall asleep in a room that’s not fully dark? Or will you have to spend extra money to block out the light that is coming out of your bathroom window?
- Is this a problem for you if there are wild parties in your neighborhood?
- Do you prefer a neighborhood which is more isolated?
- Are there a lot of loud barking dogs? Are there leash laws for the county?
If you don’t have a well thought out checklist, the apartment hunting can be a gamble for you. Do enough research and know things that you value in a neighborhood, so you can find a comfortable home for you and your family.
