Furnished vs Unfurnished Apartments - What Should You Choose And Why

When you’re renting your first apartment, the first question that comes to your mind is whether you should go for a furnished apartment or an unfurnished one. Well, furnished apartments are not very much common, but if you’re a student or a traveling professional, then it would be a right choice for you.

Furnished apartments are the ones which are usually equipped with basic appliances, furniture and other necessities like washer set, and shower curtain for the bathroom. It depends on the owner what kind of facilities he’d provide you. There are few pros and cons that must be considered before deciding whether you should go for a furnished or an unfurnished apartment.

The Pros of Furnished Apartments:

 

You can save your money:

If you want to save money, then you’ll have to be careful while moving into a furnished apartment because furnished apartments usually cost more money per month than an unfurnished apartment. If you want your own furniture, then you’ll have to buy it yourself, with your own money. So, it’s better if you choose a furnished apartment.

Moving out won’t be a problem for you:

If you move frequently, then it’s obvious that you’d have to keep minimum stuff with you. If you rent a furnished place, then this means that you won’t have to pick all the big stuff with you if you move out on a short notice.

Furnished apartments can save your time:

If you go to an unfurnished apartment, it means you’ll have to measure all your furniture and then you’ll have to find a place that will fit your furniture. This can become very much difficult for you, especially if you’re looking for an apartment on a short notice or if you’re moving across the country. So, you can also save your time by choosing an unfurnished apartment.

You get a shorter lease:

Mostly traveling professionals and students choose furnished apartments and that’s why furnished apartments don’t require a year-long lease. Furnished apartments are best for you if you’re not going to stay there for a long time.

The Cons of Furnished Apartments:

 

You’ll have to pay for the damage:

You are not only renting some empty rooms when you rent a furnished place, but you’re renting all the amenities and furniture that comes with it. If the owner has spent his money to equip the place, then it’s obvious that the cost will pass on the renter if he/she damages anything there.

You may face higher liability:

In an unfurnished apartment, there’s a chance that the owner might not return your security deposit if you accidentally damage the property. Whereas, in an unfurnished place, you’ll have to take care of the furniture as well. If you scratch the dining table or if you tear the couch, then you’re going to pay all the cost of it because that stuff belongs to the owner, not you. So, you’ll have to be very careful about it.

You won’t have any control over most of your décor:

If you dislike any of the furniture in your apartment, then you’d have to go out and buy new furniture for yourself. You’ll have to figure out what to do with the old furniture and you’ll also have to make it sure if the owner of the apartment is fine with that. You can also hang various decorative stuff on the walls but still, you can’t change the overall look of the apartment.

You’ll have only a few choices for furnished apartments:

Furnished apartments are not very much common as compared to the unfurnished apartments. So, you won’t have many choices when you look for a furnished apartment.
