A Brief look At Sialkot-Lahore Motorway And The Pros And Cons Of It
Sialkot Lahore Motorway is an under-construction highway project which is 89 km long with high speed and limited access in Pakistan. The announcement of the project was made in 2016 and its completion is due by 2018. After the completion of Sialkot Lahore Motorway, it will have 4 lanes, 7 interchanges, 40 bridges, 8 flyovers and 80 underpasses. There is a plan by the government to establish 3 industrial zones and 2 universities along the course of it.
CPEC project will have a greater impact on the economy of Pakistan. Sialkot Lahore Motorway is the part of China Pakistan Economic Corridor and it will be connected to M2 via Kala Shah Kaku Interchange in the near future. This project of SLM will have a facility to transport goods from Sialkot to the international market with a fast delivery network.
Many people have raised objections over the construction of Sialkot Lahore Motorway. According to these people, it is not the suitable way to connect different cities as millions of acres of agricultural land will be consumed by this project. The critics of Sialkot-Lahore Motorway have said that the better idea would have been to convert G.T. road to motorway because most of the cities and towns are situated on this road.
SLM will provide many benefits and advantages to the citizens because it will reduce the journey between Lahore and Sialkot to just 45 mins. Moreover, it will create employment opportunities to the people as they would be able to easily travel between the two cities. It will also help in controlling the floods by providing and serving a barrier.
SLM has many drawbacks along with its advantages. First, it will make Sialkot a satellite town of Lahore and Secondly, it will throw a negative impact on the commercial markets of Sialkot because people will use to prefer to visit Lahore for shopping. And above all, property prices will surely fall in Sialkot because most of the people will have shifted in megacities.
